Community Development – Building Stronger Latino Neighborhoods

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Community development is a crucial area of focus for Latino-focused non-profit organizations, and one that Valoramás actively supports through our $150,000 Founders’ Grants Initiative in Chicago and Houston.  There’s only a couple more days to vote, so be sure to make your voice heard in the community!

Improving different aspects of local communities is extremely important. We all want to feel safe in our neighborhoods, we want our children to grow up in positive environments and we want them to have opportunities to find their own purpose in life.

We are excited that Red Mexicana de Líderes y Organizaciones Migrantes, Enlace Chicago and the National Hispanic Professional Organization (NHPO) Leadership Institute are three of our partners working on positive community development.  Each is a part of our $150,000 Valoramás Founders’ Grants Initiative.

These three organizations are focused on :

  • community development,
  • empowering people, and
  • teaching individuals the skills necessary to make positive changes in their neighborhoods.

Effective community development seeks to empower individuals and groups of people by providing them with the skills they need to create change in their own communities.

Enlace Chicago and their community development efforts

Enlace Chicago is focused on community development in the ‘Little Village’, or ‘La Villita.’ (a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood) in Chicago. It services more than 5,000 youth and adults. The organization creates opportunities and provides resources for Little Village’s residents through four program areas:

  • Community Education
  • Community Enrichment
  • Economic Development
  • Violence Prevention

“Enlace brings together our community to develop access to more green space, impact schools and provide a safe environment for Little Village residents,” says a representative at Enlace Chicago.

The organization helps leaders to grow professionally, so that they, in turn, can impact the community development and make neighborhoods stronger. NHPO Leadership Institute was created to promote professional development training and foster a curriculum that caters to professionals from all walks of life.

Together, through community development programs, we can build healthy places for our families to grow.  These community partners are helping make our neighborhoods better places to live.  Valoramás is proud to be associated with all our community partners.  Please reward their fine work with your vote in our $150,000 Founders’ Grants Initiative!
